Grade 8 – Grade 12
Thank you for showing an interest in the secondary school of
HeronBridge College, sometimes confusingly referred to as the
College. This is the third and final component of South African
schooling, following on from the Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory
phases.
Pupils pass through to enrol in the College
on completing Grade 7 and so are with us for Grade 8 - Grade
12. These years correspond approximately to the ages 13 - 18
years.
Secondary schooling is divided into two
components: the GET (General Education and Training) and
the FET (Further Education and Training). The GET
consists of Grades 8 and 9, the FET Grades 10, 11 and
12. The final exit qualification comes at the end of the
Grade 12 year in the writing of a public examination,
the National Senior Certificate, under the auspices of
the Independent Examination Board (IEB).
The GET has a set curriculum, without choices.
Eight learning areas are covered: Languages, Mathematics,
Natural Sciences, Technology, Arts and Culture, Economic and
Management Sciences, Social Sciences and Life Orientation.
Subject choices are available in the FET. The course
comprises 7 subjects, 4 of which are compulsory: English, Afrikaans,
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation.
Thereafter 3 subjects are chosen, in our case from Biology,
Physical Science, Accounting, Art, Geography, History and Computer
Studies. Essentially, HeronBridge College presents a broad academically
oriented curriculum and serves mainly those who intend to pursue
tertiary studies.
There is a broad range of co-curricular
activities on offer and all pupils are encouraged strongly to
participate in both the cultural and sporting spheres.
We believe in a holistic approach to life and so these various
activities are seen as being vital to full development in the
adolescent years.
Equally important, if not more so,
is spiritual development and so there is an extensive programme
in this area to ensure biblical education on the academic front,
care and prayer on the nurturing front.
The high school
years are arguably the most dynamic period in life. Our pupils
enter the College as children and leave it as young adults,
ready for the challenges of life. Ours is the privilege of guiding
them through this most important transitional period and of
sharing their joys as they establish themselves firmly. Should
we be able to serve your particular family in this way, we shall
entertain an inquiry from you with the greatest of pleasure.
