Dear Parents
It is has come to our attention that there is some concern over the cost of the Heronbridge Numnah that is uniform requirement for the interschools shows.
Firstly, we respectfully request that parents do not become confrontational with Helen in the uniform shop over the cost of these as she very kindly offered to stock the numnahs for us this year, for parents convenience. Helen has purchased in bulk to reduce the cost and has included a very small handling fee to manage the stock.
The Heronbridge branded numnah's are currently being sold for R550 at the uniform shop. Parents who purchased numnah's during last year directly from the approved supplier, paid anywhere between R500 - R650 with considerable inconvenience, which is why we approached Helen to keep stock this year.
We realise that this is a considerable initial outlay. We had previously used saddle cloths, which were cheaper, but these never worked well and the majority of riders, after purchasing the less expensive saddle cloth, opted for a numnah anyway at the end of the day. The numnah's are of excellent quality, wash well, will last a number of years, meet school standards and can be sold second hand to incoming team members, so really do offer good value for money in the long run.
As with all other uniform items, the colour & structure of the numnah and the Heronbridge logo has been approved by the uniform committee and meets the branding standards and specifications required. Please do not attempt to brand your own numnah - it is considered a school uniform item and as such must be purchased from the relevant stockist.
For parents who would prefer to purchase a saddle cloth or a second hand numnah, please contact Wendy Gidlow on
wendy@heritageequestrian.co.za or Quinton Asken on
quino@netactive.co.za

Join the 2010 Equestrian Team!
At the 2009 SANEF (South African National Equestrian Federation) Interschools Awards, HeronBridge College was acknowledged as the winning school, in both the Preparatory and High School divisions in the Gauteng West region, based on accumulated points, in the largest rider category of 13-15 riders.
4 Qualifiers across the various equestrian disciplines took place between February and August where riders competed against a number of schools in the Gauteng West Region.
Based on the number of personal points accumulated over the 4 qualifiers, a large number of HBC riders were then selected for the Gauteng West A & B teams, and competed against teams selected from in the other Gauteng Regions.
A brilliant performance by HBC riders resulted in 5 Preparatory & 3 High Schoolers being selected further to represent Gauteng at the National Equestrian Finals where they received their Gauteng Schools Colours. What an achievement for both riders and HeronBridge College!
Who Can Participate?
Any student who is passionate about riding and would like to represent HeronBridge College at any level in dressage, show-jumping, equitation, working riding or performance riding.
Must I own my own Pony/Horse?
NO! As long as you ride the same pony per discipline, for each qualifier, you may ride a pony provided by your riding school. If you do not currently receive instruction or your riding school is not able to provide you with a suitable competition pony or horse, our Preparatory School Chef D’Equip, Wendy Gidlow of Heritage Equestrian Centre, will assist you in reviewing your options.
Where do my team mates ride?
Students receive private instruction at a number of Riding Schools in the area. Information on riding schools can be provided by Wendy Gidlow, the Prep School Chef d’Equip, contact details below.
I have never competed before!
No problem! A number of our riders, who contributed to HBC winning the competition, and further competed at a regional level, had never ridden in a competition prior to the first 2009 qualifier! Their dedication, commitment and passion paid off!
Showjumping entry level for the Prep School is 50cm,
Dressage entry level is Dressage lead rein - PR prelim 1
Equitation entry level is level 1, novice test 1
Performance riding and working riding entry levels are lead rein.
Showjumping entry level for the High School is 60cm
Dressage entry level is level 0 – prelim 1
Equitation entry level is level 1
Performance riding and working riding entry levels are level 1
I already compete in graded shows, can I still compete for the school?
YES! You will receive grading points as well, if you are registered with GHS.
An important distinction between inter schools competition and Graded competition is that with Graded competition, riders are separated in terms of age and size into Pony Riders (children) and Young Riders, or Juniors (teenagers). At inter-schools, the distinction is whether they are in high or primary school. Because of this, you may get a Pony Rider competing at high school level against horses and conversely, sometimes Juniors compete on their horses against the Pony Riders.
How often do we compete?
There are 4 Interschools qualifiers between January and August, which take place over a weekend (Prep & High School alternate Saturdays/Sundays) at the Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre in Muldersdrift – riders are required to participate in at least 3 qualifiers in order to be considered for the Regional Competition (based on personal accumulated points), however points for the School are accumulated and recorded regardless of the number of qualifiers ridden per student.
How many disciplines may I compete in?
As many as you please! Many of our riders compete in both dressage and show-jumping for example. Other riders compete in 1 discipline, but on different ponies/horses over a number of classes – e.g. 60cm show-jumping and 70cm show-jumping. The judges like riders to compete over as many different disciplines as possible and they run a competition called the Top Ten, where they recognise riders that compete in different disciplines on the same horse/pony. For each class that you’re aiming to be selected for the regional team for, you will have to use the same pony/horse for that class over at least 3 of the 4 qualifiers.
What do we wear?
Riders are required to wear white jodhpurs, the HeronBridge College white and navy sports shirt, black boots and riding hat. HeronBridge Tracksuit Jacket when required.
Ponies and horses wear the HeronBridge College Browband and branded Numnah, all available for purchase at the uniform store.
What is the cost of entry?
Each rider pays an entry fee of approximately R100 per class, per pony/horse, per qualifier. An additional fee of R12.50 per class is required for GHS grading.
How do I sign up?
Details of entry deadlines will be sent via text message to the cellphone number you provide. Entry forms and competition details will be available on the school website, HOWEVER for the first qualifier on 30/31 January, please enter directly at www.sanefschools.org.za, under the Gauteng West section, no later than 19 January 2010
