100% Pass Rate for HeronBridge College
HeronBridge College is extremely proud of the 2008 NSC results of its pupils.
This was the first year of the new qualification and the College’s pupils rose to the challenge, to more than meet targets set for them by their teachers.
This was only the third group of pupils to complete their schooling at HeronBridge. Over the three years a reputation for excellent academic results has been firmly established and the pattern places the College at the forefront of good schools.
Writing the IEB examinations, all of HeronBridge College’s 31 candidates passed, thus achieving a 100% pass rate.
The Bachelor Degree pass rate (the number of candidates qualifying for university access) was 84% and one third of the group attained overall averages above 75%, 4 of those 10 over 80%.
There was not a single failure in any subject.
The pupils attained a total of 60 distinctions, followed by 71 B symbols and 45 C symbols.
The Dux Scholar was Jessica George, with a total of 9 distinctions and an average of 92%. Jessica placed in the Top 50 of all IEB candidates. In addition she ranked in the top 1% of the IEB in English, Afrikaans, History, Life Sciences, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences. Jessica, was the College’s Head Girl of the year and so had to balance rigorous academic demands with a significant leadership programme.
Not to be outdone, she was followed by the Head Boy of the year, Brett Irving, with 7 distinctions and an average of 84%. Further notable achievements were placings in the top 1% also by Izaan van As in Afrikaans and Kyle van der Merwe in Mathematics.
There was much concern generally about the new system prior to the examinations being written, even up to the release of the results. HeronBridge College and teachers faced the challenges with alacrity and determination, knowing they had to be successful for the sake of the school leavers. They have proved that excellent teaching and intense learning can produce the desired results, even with all the unknowns of an introductory year.
The state of education has been much criticised since the results became known but, though there are clearly problems to be addressed, centres of excellence like HeronBridge College show just what can be achieved.
